Nottingham tram network’s latest park and ride sites, which opened as part of NET’s recent expansion, have gained a major national safety award.

The new sites at Toton Lane and Clifton South, which between them offer over 2,300 free parking spaces, have both received Park Mark safer parking awards following a police assessment.

Located at the end of the two new tram lines, the sites have extensive lighting, excellent vehicle and pedestrian access and are covered by a high-tech CCTV system.

The Park Mark awards were officially handed over by Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping. He said: “When you park your car you expect to return and find it in the same condition in which it was left. These awards will give people confidence to park up and take the tram, knowing that every effort is being made on their behalf to keep their vehicles safe. Increasing the number of passengers is good news for operator NET but this also will help to reduce congestion and cut travel costs for all those using Nottingham’s roads. In turn, safer car parks mean less demand on policing resources and fewer insurance claims making it a win-win situation.”

NET General Manager, Paul Robinson said: “This accolade is fantastic news for our customers. From the start, the facilities were designed with safety and security as top priorities.

“In addition to sophisticated digital CCTV cameras, regular patrols by our staff provide additional peace of mind for customers.”

Nationally there are around 5,000 car parks that feature the distinctive Park Mark ‘tick’ as part of an initiative developed by the Association of Chief Police Officers and the British Parking Association and the new sites join a number of other NET facilities, including Phoenix Park, Wilkinson Street and Hucknall, in achieving the standard.

Louis Walmsley, NET’s Quality, Health and Safety Manager explained. “Although we’ve received these latest awards, we’ll not become complacent. We’re always looking at ways to improve security even further so we ensure our sites offer as safe an environment as possible.”

Park Mark Scheme Area Manager, Peter Gravells said: “I’m delighted NET is in the scheme. It is evident from the management practices and excellent physical attributes of all the car parks that every consideration has been given to the user.”
