14 West Dorset and Weymouth car parks awarded Park Mark
A Park Mark is awarded to parking facilities that have passed requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the Police. These requirements include:
• Quality management
• Appropriate lighting
• Effective surveillance
• Clean environment
Chas Cannon, Area Manager for the British Parking Association, said “I am delighted that both West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council have achieved a total of 14 Park Mark awards. It shows their commitment to providing safe and secure parking facilities to both residents and visitors to the area.”
Six West Dorset District Council run car parks received the award and eight by Weymouth & Portland Borough Council.
Achieving the Park Mark award means the district and borough councils have put in place measures to help deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything the councils can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in the areas’ parking facilities.
Inspector Pete Browning of Weymouth and West Dorset Police said: "I am really pleased to see that these car parks have been recognised as offering a safe and secure place for motorists to leave their vehicle whilst they visit the town and enjoy the local amenities.
“Schemes like this contribute to reducing crime in the area, which can only be a good thing."
Cllr John Russell, West Dorset District Council Portfolio holder for Environmental Protection and Assets, said: “It is important to provide safe car parking for residents and visitors. Achieving the Park Mark award exhibits this and highlights the great work being done by our parking team to improve our parking infrastructure.”
Cllr Ray Nowak, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Brief-holder for Transport and Infrastructure, said: “It’s great that our parking team have been able been able to achieve so many Park Mark awards for our car parks. However, we’re always looking to improve. It would be wonderful to see even more of our car parks awarded in the future.”
